Over the years I’ve asked this question countless times of the managers and supervisors in my live leadership workshops: What one action could you take that would make you a better leader now? It’s really a no-nonsense, cut-to-the-chase, let’s-be-totally-honest-with-one-another type of question.

Having asked the question many times, I’ve come to expect most hands in the room will go up.  When they do, I follow with a second question:

“So if you want to be a better leader, why don’t you take action?”

It’s a fairly simple equation: If you can identify what needs to be done, it should be easy to forge ahead.  Right?  Not so fast.

Three Reasons Leaders Don’t Take Action

I can think of at least three reasons aspiring leaders may be hesitant to take action to overcome the obvious challenges that hinder their effectiveness.

1)    They know what needs to be done, but they don’t know how to do it;
2)    They know what needs to be done, but they don’t know what the end result of their efforts will be;
3)    They know what needs to be done, but they don’t know who they can trust to help them be successful.

So here’s my personal challenge:  If you really want to be a better leader, identify and commit to one action that you will take now to immediately improve your leadership effectiveness.
